Can a new roof get hail damage?

Absolutely a new roof can get hail damage. Typically it will take a .50” or more in diameter sized hail stone to cause damage to common asphalt shingles, but regardless of when they were installed, they can be damaged. Newer roofing materials do hold up better against hail than older roofing materials that have been under the elements for years, so depending on how old your roof is could determine the amount of damage you sustain. In addition, the quality of the roofing materials will also factor in how much a roof is damaged.

Is hail damage to roofs covered by insurance?

If the damage from a hail storm is functional or even cosmetic then it should be covered under your homeowner’s insurance policy, depending on the policy.
